===Dedicated Help Thread=== *new constructors please read p.1 first!   posted: 17-Nov-02 18:13   »»
Hello Everyone!

This thread is based on an idea put forward by SirDougie a while back. As we all know, sodaplay is inundated with new players every day. It is difficult for some to adapt to the culture we have built around ed's wondrous constructor.

This thread should be a place for new players to congregate and get an idea of what sodaplay is all about. Also, it should be a place where anyone should feel comfortable giving and receiving help either on either grand concepts, or specific models.

Please follow these basic guidelines for the betterment of the community:

1.) Please don't post new topic threads for frivolous reasons. A topic should be something that will likely spark lots of discussion or debate in the community. A new thread that just says "Hi!" is not constructive. If you are uncertain about which topics belong on the boards and which do not, just hang out for a couple of days and watch which kinds of things get positive responses and keep an eye on the constructors who contribute appropriately to learn the ropes.

2.) Learning construction is a largely solo task. No one can force this knowledge into your head. But when you do ask for help, keep in mind that you are asking people who spend their free time here. Please be polite and be as specific as possible to avoid wasting their time or forcing them to ask you questions to get the necessary information they need to help you. This means posting model links with questions. Asking "Why does this model not work?" is not enough. Instead, post the model (using the "how do I post a model link" help window provided by ed on the reply screen) and explain what you are trying to get it to do and what you have tried so far.

These rules are very basic. It is possible to have lots of fun and learn great skills in this framework. Please be nice to everyone and avoid sarcasm and curse words. This will help make the forum an even better place where you can learn all you desire!

My very best,

w

Thank you warptera, for making this desired thread!

I just wanted to post here a link to Lectvay's wonderful site. It should help all those that just started building here, and even those that have been building for a while now.

http://sodaplaycentral.vze.com/

Please enjoy.
If there is anything you think is not clear enough on this site, I'm sure Lectvay would be happy if you told him how to improve his site.

Happy constructing.

i need some help on a model.
http://sodaplay.com/constructor/player.htm?&getmodel=spartan+attemptatwarpmotor
i had an idea to use warptera's linear wedge motor. the only problem is that my models legs move in opposite directions. the two sides do nothing but work against each other, so the model goes no where. is there any way this problem can be fixed?

Yes spartan,

you had the right idea, but notice that the way your triangles are connected to the frame is just like a hinge. this only allows them to move back and forth, rather than up/down & left/right (elliptical motion).

Take a look at "Touchstone" using this motor:

http://sodaplay.com/constructor/player.htm?&getmodel=warptera+Touchstone

This model is similar to yours except that each leg has two hinges, thus allowing for elliptical movement.

Here is a reduced version so that you can see how the legs are connected:

http://sodaplay.com/constructor/player.htm?&getmodel=Example+Spartan1

There are many possible configurations that allow for the legs to move in circles. Let me know if any of this isn't quite clear.

Any experts that are looking in this section at the moment, could you please help me with this model, it won't stand up straight.

Thanks

Flarenya,

I'm not sure what you're tryin to get that model to do. It is reminiscent of one of ed's original 12 sodaplay models:

http://sodaplay.com/constructor/player.htm?&getmodel=sodaplay+cheekytriangle

Is this what you're going for?

Hello,
I can't make this model work,
is there anybody here who can make this model be something different than a funny looking thing?
thanks in advance

wwolfie,

it looks pretty cool to me. did you make that or adapt it from something else in the zoo.

Are you saying you'd like it to walk?

wwolfie,

I thought about it for a little bit and managed to program the spikes in you zero-g model, it took a little while to find the right order but here it is:

that's a cool idea you had, congrats.

Hi, does anyone have a suggestion of what I could do with this motor?

RR,

hmmm... my instincts tell me that you should make a second set of "guts" in that thing. If each corresponding muscle was programmed 50% out of phase with the other set of guts', and you made four more legs, th model would walk on its own and might be easier to implement as a motor.

I don't have any idea at all about in which topic to put this question, so I decided to put it here, just to avoid creating any new topics.
I have got kind of addict to soda the last weeks. It is hard to focus my mind in school, when all you are thinking about is how to get that amoeba to work.
How do you, especially those of you who has a dozen of models in the zoo every day, get the time needed for that kind of high-intensive sodaconstructing. How do you combine sodaplaying with studies?
You must be doing something else. Right?
Just wondering :-)

this actually might make a good new topic. if someone else wants to respond, we could make a new thread.

Personally, the only part of my constructing that takes up time is learning or inventing new concepts or skills. this only happens once every two weeks or so. the rest of my models combine componants or idea that are already in my head.

I save time because I recycle parts and I took the time to learn construction techniques like predicting the length of multipoint tension springs. When I actually sit down to construct, it usually only takes 5 or 10 minutes becuase its already worked out in my head.

That being said, I am sometimes kept awake at night (like last: "Glass_Mechanism") by an idea.

Sorry this is a little late, but no, warptera i wasn't going for the cheeky triangle, i was trying to make a rolling triangle. Do you know how cool that would be, i added the little tiny triangle to see if it would roll with the bigger one. ed's model is really cool though. Any ideas?
