The FIRST-SME group does anual projects in a real-life situation. Robots are built by schools and controlled my students. I know this isn't AI, but I think we could use a few ideas.
Every team is given a set of tasks that needs to be completed. The tasks are the same for every school's group. In regional and national competitions, groups attempt to perform the tasks better or more creative than other groups. Awards are given for numerous aspects such as creativity.
I think that sodarace could host competitions among groups of members or single members to attempt to create AI bots to perform a certain task. By doing so, we will slowly but surely develop aspects of AI and then be able to form techniques and wide-use methods. Why not turn sodarace INTO the discussion forum? That's the best way to learn...
