genetic algorithms and formatting   posted: 21-Apr-06 12:53   »»
hi,
I'm an italian student and I have a problem.
I 'm developing a software for formatting with genetic algorithms (for university) .
This problem is a kind of bin packing but my fitness must take the rectangle's align in consideration.
How can I add this characteristic in my fitness.
What are the functions that take align in consideration?
How can valutate good a bin well formatted (in other words a bin that contains rectangles not overlapped and aligned)?
I'm sorry for my english and I wait for your responses.
Thanks for your time.

There hasn't been a lot of work in this area because it is very hard to specify a good fitness function. All the work I have seen has used interactive evolution. Here's a link to get you started:

Maybe you can contact the authors of this paper and ask them if they know of any similar work?
