Neural Nets for sodaplay   posted: 25-Mar-06 17:44   »»
I've been working on some neural net style AI recently in java and I got the idea to try it out with something like sodaplay. I have no idea how to get anything to interface with sodaplay though and I don't think models have senses either so it probably wouldn't matter. I just wanted to see what everyone else thought of the idea. Perhaps if I knew how the physics in sodayplay worked I could make my own sandbox version or miniclone to play with my AI. All my physics engines are unstable :(

That sounds very interesting, but I know little about Sodaplay interfacing...all I really know is that Sodaconstructor Local sends model information out on port 4444. Models don't have senses, but maybe, if you improved at programming physics engines, you could make a sodaplay-type physics engine where the models do have senses. That would be cool...

Well, I have something: http://www.alrecenk.cjb.net:81/java/show/ai/math/a-life/test.html
It's not super fancy right now, but it works and it evolves both models(point positions but not topology) and AI. I used the current length of lines as the input to the AI. So actually, adding the sense of feel came quite naturally. My physics engine uses springs and they aren't extremely rigid so when the creature bumps into something it changes the length of a line and therefore could produce a reaction from the AI. I've still got a lot of work to do on both the physics and the AI but I haven't run into anything yet that seemed particularaly impossible.
