Different Sodarace Categories   posted: 03-Sep-02 09:03   »»
The issue of "cheaters" has come up quite a bit. Things such as a simple amoeba creator which could win many of the races with little to no effort.

To promote actual AI competition, I propose different categories or racing such as:

1) Mountain climbing (models navigate over very high peaks)
2) Stair climbing (models climb sets of stairs, perhaps a single model may be able to climb a range of step sizes?)
3) Drag race (highest speed on a flat surface)

Simple amoebas could not win all these so actual AI would be required.

I agree. Elsewhere folks have suggested segregating categories of models such as ameobas and walkers to address the suspicion that simple muscular ameobas will rule the races.

However I think you're on the right track here by recognising that it is the environment that should cause the spontaneous emergence of model categories, rather than us imposing pre-determined model categories in advance. Much like life methinks!

this has been proposed MANY times and ed said that there will in fact be categories.

I've believe I said there may be different types of races, but I've always pointed out the impractibility of applying categories such as walker/ameoba to models because a) it would require human intervention to vet race entrants and recognise the categories and b) it is far from clear how you could prescribe to an AI to only develop models of a particular type [remember that most AI's may produce many thousands of test models to incrementally refine their designs, so requiring a human to say for each entrant yep, that's a walker or that's an ameoba is not practicle].

What should happen is that different types of races simply invite different sorts of optimal solutions, so if categories emerge the do so naturally in response to the race environment.

when you say there will be different categories is this in the sense that each entry is entered for a specific category or each entry is tested within all categories? ..the later makes more sense to me personally but i dont think anyone has explicitly said so. it makes for a much more interesting problem in terms of multi-optimisation evolutionary search and in terms of what the results will look like. i can imagine it being quite difficult for a human to create a design that is good at all categories equally.
